ROMY
ROMY lives and works in Berlin. She studied painting and graphic art at the IBKK in Bochum from 2003 to 2006, attended the master class of Andreas Christ from 2006 to 2007 and graduated with a diploma in painting and graphic art in 2008. She has worked as a freelance artist since 2006. She is a member of the BBK, the Professional Association of Visual Artists.
Her paintings are made in the grisaille technique of the Old Masters: first the light-and-dark underpainting, then layer upon layer of transparent color, up to forty glazes. Some works hold a second layer that appears only when you ask for it.
My visit was like diving into another sphere – between image and mirror, body and projection, myth and present. Your works rethink the classical portrait and lead it into a hybrid world in which the analog and the digital mirror and complete each other like twins.
The paintings carry a quiet depth, an aura of many layers – almost as if you were watching them breathe. And then, through Omen Reality, they begin to whisper, to speak, to live. A poetic dialogue between work and gaze, between closeness and mystery.
The exhibition is a space of experience – like a cocoon in which painting dreams and lives on digitally.

The Face of the Soul
There are two key terms essential to understanding this artist: revelation and disclosure. The first belongs to the object as it presents itself to the viewer; the second comes from the gaze of the observer toward what is being seen. This is how I would like to introduce the artistic practice of Romy Campe.
Prof. Alberto D’Atanasio, PURE ROMY catalog, 2025

The human being plays the central role in Romy Campe’s work. The artist’s portraits reflect human traits – inner states, moods and frames of mind. Even though her motifs also bear features of the fantastic and the surreal, all of this points to the early modern tradition of the psychological image of the human being. Some motifs thus call to mind great painting traditions (Caravaggio, Frans Hals, Rembrandt).
